Hat of the Day Sketch – pointed straw hat with ribbon trim, 1885

April 15, 2010

Todays HOTD is a pointed yellow straw hat with ribbon trim spiraling up one side and additional trim where the crown meets the brim.  The brim has a ribbon edge to finish out this piece of fine millinery.  I drew this from a black and white illustration that originally came from Peterson’s Magazine in 1885.  I decided to take liberties with coloring this hat in colors of my choice in soft pastels — I chose a lively sky blue for the ribbon with some purple accents at the base of the crown.

I could actually see this hat on a modern woman with the right outfit….
